Greene King gets a foods sales lift under its belt

Beer sales are stumbling across the country, but Greene King is on the up thanks to its quality food offering.

The brewer and pub operator says sales were up 4.4% in the last 18 weeks, a market-beating performance. Like-for-like food sales rose 8.6%.

Sales of Greene King's own beer, which includes IPA, are down nearly 5%, a result that unnerved the City a little. Critics say IPA is too often flat and watery in London pubs.

Chief executive Rooney Anand said: "The economic and consumer environment remains uncertain. However, we are confident of delivering another successful year for our shareholders."
