Greggs eyes Threshers estate

Your local wine shop could soon be selling cakes and pies instead.

Greggs, the bakers, is looking at snapping up around 100 Threshers stores and converting them.

First Quench Retailing, which owns Threshers, collapsed into administration last month. Ken McMeikan, the chief executive of Greggs, told the Independent: "Our property team is looking at the Thresher estate. We look at every chain that goes into administration. It would probably be in the region of less than 10 per cent of the estate."

Last month Greggs said it planned to open more than 600 new shops, taking its number of stores to more than 2,000. First Quench has 1,200 stores, including the Wine Rack, The Local, Haddows and Bottoms Up brands. Tomorrow is the deadline for interested parties to submit first-round bids for the businesses.
