Revenue rose 11% to £1.31 billion, and net profit was up 31% to £91.9 million. The bulging coffers of the oil states of the Persian Gulf are driving an unprecedented construction boom across the region that has brought in many foreign firms.

The company is in the middle of a share buyback program that will return £100 million to shareholders.

"We start the new year in a good position with work in hand representing 55% of our budgeted revenue and are continuing to increase headcount," the company said.

Bucking the trend of many companies which are slashing staff, Atkins has added 1400 to the payroll during the year to bring the total to almost 17,300.

"While there is of course uncertainty about the future direction of some of the economies in which we operate, we have not seen any sign of reduction in activity," the firm added.
