GW Pharma's cannabis medicine to win UK approval

GW Pharmaceuticals today announced its cannabis-based medicine for multiple sclerosis sufferers will win regulatory approval in the UK before the end of next month.

After more than a decade in development, GW said Sativex, an under-the-tongue cannabis spray which aims to ease MS patients' muscle stiffness, will become available on prescription in Britain and Spain in June.

The drugmaker — which grows Sativex's genetically cloned marijuana plants in secret locations around England — will receive £12.5 million from Germany's Bayer and Spain's Almirall, who are marketing the prescription drug, when it is formally approved.

Sativex became the world's first cannabis medicine to win regulatory approval in Canada in 2005. It is also being put through trials as a treatment for pain in patients with advanced cancer.

Dr Geoffrey Guy, chairman of the pharma group, said: "GW is transitioning from a late-stage development company to a commercial pharmaceutical business with excellent growth prospects."

The group posted a pre-tax loss of £2.7 million for the six months to March 31.
