Headache for C&C as sales of cider slide

Magners cider maker C&C had more flat news for investors today, with a trading statement that came close to a profits warning.

The Dublin-based group said sales will be down 8% for the first half of the year, but claimed improving margins will leave profits broadly similar to 2007's.

C&C blames the declining economy for lower sales of Magners. Trend-watchers say the fashion for cider over ice in a pint glass was always going to be a fad. Sales of Bulmers, the rival brand, have also been hit of late.

C&C will report interim results on 9 October. It cautions they will be at the "low end" of City expectations. The shares today fell almost 4% to ¤2.26.
