Hope of brotherly love boosts Reliance shares

Shares in two companies run by the feuding Ambani billionaire brothers in India both rose sharply today after the younger sibling, Anil, said he wanted their five-year battle to end.

But analysts said the truce would not stop a court fight next next week between the two companies — Anil's Reliance Natural Resources and his elder brother Mukesh's Reliance Industries.

After a pilgrimage to two holy shrines on Sunday, Anil sent a conciliatory message to Mukesh, saying their dispute could be settled amicably.

"There can be no better gift to my mother, Kokilaben Ambani, in her 75th year, and to the legacy of our beloved father, Dhirubhai Ambani, the proud creator of the Reliance Group," Anil said.

Dhirubai Ambani, who built his Reliance empire from scratch, died in 2002. The feud between his sons became public in 2004 and the following year they split his conglomerate, with Mukesh getting petrochemical, oil and gas exploration and refining and textiles. Anil took on the telecoms, power, leisure and financial services businesses.

In Mumbai, Reliance Natural Resources shares rose more than 5% while Reliance Industries was 3% higher.
