Households lose cover as Homecall+ goes bust

One of Britain's biggest home emergency insurance providers was today forced into compulsory liquidation, leaving homeowners and landlords in the lurch.

Homecall+ - which charged customers up to £205 a year to cover problems with boilers, plumbing, electrics, vermin or roofing - was forced into liquidation after being petitioned by a creditor.

The Insolvency Service said the unnamed creditor was not the taxman.

The appointed receiver will now examine Homecall+'s assets, but the thousands of policyholders are unlikely to receive redress.

Until December, Homecall+ policies were underwritten by Brit Insurance.

Brit said it will pay out for existing policies bought before December 3, but it appears the company had no underwriting policies after that date, making so-called cover worthless.

Homecall+ is legally obliged to tell customers about its liquidation on its website and provide contact details, but has not yet done so.

Its phone line was cut off.

Analysts this week pointed out that Homeserve, the biggest independent home emergency cover group, is one of the most shorted stocks in the service sector, amid worries about policy renewals.

The Insolvency Service said Homecare+ customers should contact it on 0161 234 8531.
