The Conservative peer who made his first fortune building up and selling the Shandwick PR empire has been busy doing a repeat job with Huntsworth over the past decade, buying smaller agencies across the world.

He said that now, as with Shandwick in the 1990s, it was time to consolidate the businesses into units better coordinated to make it more attractive to multinational clients.

Grayling will become the third-biggest independent PR firm in the world behind Edelman and Waggener Edstrom. Huntsworth will focus on global healthcare contracts, Citigate on financial PR and Red on consumer PR.

Lord Chadlington said: "We're only looking at about 15 or 20 redundancies worldwide, mostly at senior levels, out of a workforce of about 1700."
