Inmarsat finds success in world's disaster zones

Earthquakes and wars are good news for Inmarsat.

The company operates satellite communications for use in disaster zones and on battlefields where normal telecoms infrastructure are unusable, and saw a huge jump in profits in the fourth quarter.

"Some of the natural disasters and consequent humanitarian responses, combined with the continuing engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan, have called heavily on satellite communications," chief executive Andrew Sukawaty said today.

Aid agencies, media and other professionals operating in Haiti and Chile have been forced into using satellite technology to communicate, bringing in surging revenues for Inmarsat.

The company's satellites, which provide services for ships, aircraft and remote locations around the world, saw underlying profits jump 18% in the fourth quarter of the year to $119.7 million
(£80 million) on revenues up 13% to $181.5 million.

Sukawaty said the group was on track to launch into the market for hand-held satphones in June — an event he said would provide solid growth in revenues during 2010.

An 8% leap in its land division's revenues was largely due to the troop surge in Afghanistan, analysts noted, while maritime growth also accelerated.
