It all goes flat for Big Yellow

Self-storage warehouses operator Big Yellow today said total occupancy of its units has been flat in the first quarter because of the slower property market.

"What benefits Big Yellow is any sort of movement in the market - with people buying, selling or renovating and needing self-storage, so obviously it is closely tied to the housing market" a spokesman said.

Average occupancy of all stores in the quarter was 1,813,000 sq ft, against 1,822,000 sq ft in the same quarter last year, although there was a slight increase from the March quarter. Income rose 4% to £14.5 million from the previous quarter.

The firm opened a new store in Kennington during the quarter, bringing its total to 48.
