London bosses ‘most confident’

Employers in the capital are the most confident of any in the UK, with 9% ready to take on more staff, according to a new survey.

Only 1% expects to cut jobs and 90% intend to keep staff levels as they are, according to the report by employment services company Manpower.

"Despite a slowdown in the economy and overall weakening employer confidence, it is business as usual for Londoners. Employers across the board are telling us they want to recruit more workers," Debby Fairweather, Manpower's London operations manager says.

With 1% intending to cut jobs and 9% planning to add staff, the survey gives a balance of plus 8% compared with the UK average of minus 1%.

"While the fourth quarter is a slower hiring period in many sectors, hiring in the hotels and retail sector is typically stronger. We are already seeing a pick-up in demand for customer services and contact-centre workers as employers prepare for the Christmas rush," Fairweather says.
