London Stock Exchange fends off takeover talk as revenues leap

London Stock Exchange bosses today refused to comment on growing speculation that it could become the target of a takeover bid following its failed attempt to buy the Toronto stock exchange.

Nasdaq remains the favourite to make its third attempt to buy the LSE but rivals in Singapore and Hong Kong have also been lined up as prospective bidders.

"We are not going to get into any speculation about what might be going on out there," said finance director Doug Webb. "The overarching message from our first quarter is that despite the fact that many of us spent a great deal of time on a deal which did not complete we still achieved revenue growth of 14%."

Revenues for the three months to the end of June were £190.2 million with primary markets income up 22% boosted by the flotations on the London market of Glencore, DP World and Bumi.

While flotations will calm down in the summer, Webb said the pipeline for the second half was "much stronger than it has been for a while".

LSE shares rose 28p to 1024½p. They have gained 10% since it dropped its bid for TMX, the Toronto exchange owner, at the end of June.

Chief executive Xavier Rolet said: "We remain focused on developing the business, including initiatives in derivatives, fixed income and technology sales."
