Losing game at Eidos despite revenues rise

Computer games outfit Eidos is selling plenty of stock, but struggling to turn the sales into a profit.

The company behind Tomb Raider, Hitman and Championship Manager today said revenue for the last six months rose 27% to £80 million but it made a loss of almost £10 million.

The group is restructuring but seems unlikely to return to its former glories. The shares topped 500p in the summer of 2007. Eidos recently accepted an £84 million, 32p-a-share takeover bid from Square Enix.

The deal is awaiting shareholder approval, but seems likely to get the nod.

The latest instalment of Lara Croft game Tomb Raider did not do as well as hoped over Christmas, but it remains popular.

Chief executive Phil Rogers said: "The first six months of trading this year were characterised by an incredibly competitive and increasingly challenging retail environment."

Rogers is one year into what he expects to be a three-year turnaround plan.
