Loss-hit Clipper in a shuffle

Clipper Windpower, the wind turbine manufacturer planning to build the world's biggest windmill in North-East England, today unveiled massive losses and replaced its pioneering chief executive.

Jim Dehlsen, a founding father of wind-energy technology, will move up to chairman of
AIM-listed Clipper to make way for Doug Pertz, a manager recruited to the group by one of its biggest shareholders.

Losses more than doubled to $211 million (£114 million) in the first half from $78 million a year ago as Clipper was hit by a $145 million charge for fixing duff blades and gearboxes it had supplied.

Dehlsen grew Clipper rapidly in the past year. But problems in the factory have proved costly as engineers had to go to wind farms to mend faulty equipment.

In 1980, Dehlsen founded Zond, a windpower company that is now, renamed under General Electric's ownership, the biggest maker of turbines in the world. He made £290 million when he sold it to Enron.

A spokesman today said he will focus on the technology side of the business, having sorted out the company's manufacturing problems.

Clipper floated at just under 190p a share in 2005. The shares peaked above 900p in May 2007 but today fell 1 ½p to 412 ½p.

Pertz arrived at the company when private-equity firm One Equity bought a 12% stake in April at 480p a share.
