Manufacturing enjoys rebound as weak sterling helps exports

Manufacturers are enjoying a sustained bounceback from the depths of recession as the weak pound helps them to export their goods.

The closely watched Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply's poll of industrialists said new exports in February rose at their fastest rate since at least January 1996. Sales to the US and Asia were particularly strong.

"We're really seeing signs that seem to point towards a full sector recovery," said CIPS chief executive David Noble.

Overall, the CIPS index score covering all elements of manufacturing activity , in which anything above 50 marks an improvement, was 56.6 — the same as January.

However, economists pointed out that manufacturing only makes up a small proportion of Britain's services-based economy.
