Mittal may join the fight for Rio Tinto

Speculation is mounting that Lakshmi Mittal, Britain's richest man with an estimated fortune of £28 billion, is to join the battle for mining group Rio Tinto, currently the target of a hostile £80 billion bid by rival BHP Billiton.

Mittal is the largest shareholder, chairman and chief executive of steelmaker Arcelor Mittal, and as such is keen to secure long-term supplies of iron ore.

Goldman Sachs, which advises Mittal, has appointed him to its main board as an independent director. He will be a member of its audit, compensation, corporate governance and nomination committees.
