Surrey-based Magazine Marketing Company failed owing up to £700,000 to publishers, triggering fears its demise could force some niche magazine publishers out of business.

Hundreds of thousands of magazines have been impounded in warehouses because of the administration, according to Media Week, prompting concerns publishers will also lose out on advertising revenue.

MMC distributed more than 400 magazine titles to supermarkets, high street shops such as WH Smith and Martin McColl and independent newsagents.

The group — which has ceased trading — was also heavily involved in the magazine export business, with 77 agents selling titles in 58 countries.

It was put up for sale last month but when no buyers came forward before the May 14 deadline, administrators MCR were appointed.
