Net some bargains
Online designer outlets such as BrandAlley, which sells discounted goods from more than 1000 fashion brands including Superdry, Jaeger, Timberland and Lipsy, saw membership rise by more than 500,000 in 2011 to 2.5 million customers. Now the model is spreading to other sectors. Free site Halfpintchic.com sells posh childrenswear brands including Baby Graziella, Caramel Baby and Child, Poppy and Ned and Berlingot at up to 70% off for christening gowns and flower-girl dresses from names including Royal Wedding designer Nicki Macfarlane and Italy's Simonetta. Another free online sale site, Achica, caters for homeware. Its sales are open for either 48 or 72 hours, from 7am. Sales include Designers Guild accessories and Belledorm bed sheets.
Post office savings
"Buy lots of stamps now before they go up in price stratospherically in April," advises reader Annie Shaw of the CashQuestions website. Royal Mail has asked regulator Ofcom to hike the cost of second-class stamps by 53% this spring, from 36p to 55p.
That's the biggest annual increase since 1975, and could see the cost of a book of 12 second-class stamps soaring from £4.32 to £6.60 overnight.
Stamps don't have use-by dates. Make further savings by using a 5%-off offer presently available at WH Smith. Two books of 12 first-class or second-class stamps bought online until midnight tonight will cost £10.49 and £8.21 respectively. Opt to collect in store, or buy more than £15 worth to avoid paying for delivery.
Tips to check out
More readers' tips to help save money. "Always, always make a list when shopping," says Rob Cooper, founder of online free budgeting site moflo.co.uk. "For a challenge, before you get to the checkout, put one item back. Never shop when hungry. And always think in percentages of cost when bargain-hunting. People are too quick to write off monetary amounts, but a 36% discount is much more appealing. Calculate your total costs per month - people think £5 per day on lunch isn't so bad, but when you add it up, it's expensive."
Dramatic reductions
Ever seen a theatre poster and bought impromptu tickets? Next time, be sure you're getting the best price by using UK Theatre Web's new app.
Download it free from Android Market (search for UKTW) and snap the show's poster with your camera phone. UKTW will beam back info about ticket prices, availability and venue.
