More woe for Jessops

Photography chain Jessops today reported a further deterioration in sales and confirmed it is on course to post yet another loss.

The debt-ridden high street firm said sales were down 4.7% in the past 12 weeks, worse than the 3.6% decline seen in the eight weeks to 24 May and 4.5% slump of the previous six months.

Jessops blamed "the continuing difficult retail environment" as the recession wreaks havoc on the high street.

"The board continues to expect the business to report a loss for the year," it added.

Jessops racked up losses of £19.1 million in 2008 and £9.3 million in 2007.

Shares in the firm collapsed from above 150p to just 15p in six months in 2007 and have continued to slide ever since. It is now desperately trying to cut its debt mountain to secure its future but the firm again said today that any agreement with its bank HSBC will wipe out shareholders completely.

Jessops, which has some 200 stores, has been hit by competition from online and the rise of the camera phone.
