Mothercare relies on overseas growth

Mothercare had a surprisingly good Christmas given the carnage all around it on the high street, but it is still relying firmly on its international arm for growth.

In the 13 weeks to 7 January sales in the UK fell 6.9%, but that was partly due to planned store closures. Like for like sales slid 3%.

Chairman Alan Parker, running the business since the departure of chief executive Ben Gordon, agrees the company needs a makeover.

"The business in the UK is 50 years old, it has to be refreshed. We need to make sure it is relevant to today's Mums."

He admits Mothercare goods have been somewhat overpriced, an issue he says is being addressed. "Give us another chance," he asked.

Parker is interviewing for a new chief executive -- insisting he won't be taking that position himself.

The international business is booming, sales are up 15%.

The shares added 5.25p to 169.75p.
