Musicals lift gloom for Holidaybreak

MUSICAL-lovers flocking to the capital to see the latest shows, and renewed interest in UK camping, have in part offset a slide in short-break bookings in the UK at Holidaybreak.

The travel group says sales of West End theatre trips are up more than a fifth on last year while, despite only going on sale at Easter, demand for its UK campsites has been strong. This year is the first since the mid-1990s Holidaybreak has offered domestic camping holidays.

"Oliver! has reignited interest in London theatre. People want to treat themselves to a show, a bit of escapism from the recession," said chief executive Carl Michel. "People who in the past would have gone to Europe are taking weekend breaks in London." He added that Snowdonia and the West Country have been its best-performing campsites.

Holidaybreak, which traditionally makes a seasonal loss in the first half, saw losses double to £36.6 million for the six months to the end of March as it wrote down the value of Explore, its adventure holidays arm, which has been hard hit by recession.
