New Britain Palm Oil sees 2009 profit down a third

New Britain Palm Oil expects its 2009 pretax profit to fall by over a third if the price of palm oil remains at current levels, and it plans to build further refineries in Europe over the coming years.

"I see profit before tax (for 2009) coming in at between $70 million and $80 million, so I'd say at the higher end of those numbers," director Alan Chaytor told Reuters in an interview.

"The current price (per tonne of palm oil) is roughly $585, and our actual achieved price was $926 last year, so the price is driving forecasts."

New Britain, which earlier this month received planning permission to build a refinery in Liverpool, northwest England, hopes it will be the "first of a further one or two sites" in Europe, Chaytor added.
