New Notting Hill store raises Daylesford Organic losses

Sales are still rising at Daylesford Organic despite the recession, but losses climbed at the foodie favourite because of the cost of opening its newest store in Notting Hill.

Owner Lady Bamford, the wife of multi-millionaire and JCB chairman Sir Anthony Bamford, is keeping the food retailer afloat by pumping in her own cash.

Sales rose 17 per cent to £8.5 million in 2008, according to its latest accounts. But Daylesford, whose fans include Liz Hurley and Kate Winslet, made a pre-tax loss of £10 million in 2008, according to its latest accounts. This takes the total losses the company has racked up since it was founded seven years ago to almost £27 million.

A spokesman for Daylesford said: "This investment has been made to lay the foundations for secure future growth and we are fortunate to have the leadership, vision and financial support of Carole Bamford."

Daylesford has counters in Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, but shut its butchers in Pimlico Green last year.
