Northern Foods savours its Irish merger venture

Northern Foods used today's trading update to tell its shareholders that its all-share merger with Ireland's Greencore was a compelling proposition.

The maker of Fox's biscuits and Goodfella's pizzas faces a potential rival takeover bid from Ranjit Boparan, the so-called "chicken king of Birmingham."

His Buxted empire has built up a 6.6% stake in Northern.

"If an offer came in, we'd have to consider it, and price is going to be key. Our fiduciary duty as board members is to make sure we have considered employees and other stakeholders as well but price will obviously be a key issue," acting chief executive Simon Herrick said.

Sales rose 3.1% in the latest quarter.
