Number of London Stock Exchange flotations double

The number of companies coming to the market doubled during the last six months, the London Stock Exchange said today.

However, that was not enough to counter the fall in rights issues which were so popular among companies repairing their balance sheets a year ago.

While new floats raised £4.9 billion — up from £700 million — in the six months to September, secondary issues raised only £11 billion, down from £30.1 billion.

The LSE also said the value of equities traded rose by 12% in the five months to the end of August, boosted by its Italian subsidiary Borsa Italiana.

The value of traded equities in the UK rose 9%, while the value in Italy was up 20% in local currencies. Its share of total UK cash equities had been broadly stable over the period, the LSE added.
