OECD doubts quick recovery from recession

A leading economic think-tank today cast doubt on the speed of Britain's recovery from recession.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development warned UK output will fall 1.1% next year - more than any other major economy. It also forecast 2010 growth of just 0.8%, making our recovery weaker than in the US, Germany, France and Canada.

Chancellor Alistair Darling yesterday predicted a decline of 1% in 2009 followed by growth of 1.75% in 2010 and argued Britain is better placed than other countries to cope with the global downturn.

Treasury sources point out the OECD forecast does not take into account the rescue plan outlined in the Pre-Budget Report. But there are doubts the package will be as effective as ministers claim.

Shadow Chancellor George Osborne said: "One of the most respected independent bodies in the world says the growth forecasts are too optimistic."
