Opponents delay Barack Obama bank rescue

US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner has postponed the unveiling of the Obama administration's bank rescue plans until tomorrow in an effort to bring together fractious congressmen who disagree with the programme.

"We're focused on working with Congress to pass an economic recovery Bill so we can create the jobs and make the investments necessary to get our economy moving again," Isaac Baker of the Treasury Department said.

Geithner will outline the bailout plan in a speech tomorrow instead of today as planned, the Treasury Department said.

With the Senate now focused on a massive economic stimulus package it is due to vote on tomorrow, Geithner postponed release of the bank plan.

The stimulus and the bank rescue plan are key parts of President Barack Obama's strategy for tackling the financial crisis.
