Pound at 19-month high against euro

Sterling hit a new 19-month high against the euro today as traders bet on a brighter future in Britain than the debt-ridden eurozone.

The pound rose nearly half a cent to 1.2352 — its highest level since November 2008.

The pound has risen as the Greek debt crisis hit the euro.

It gained further support from plans in last week's emergency Budget to tackle Britain's debts.
