Pound hits five-month high against dollar

Sterling hit a five-month high against the US dollar today as traders bet on the UK's economic recovery.

The pound rose 0.58 cents to $1.5656 against a broadly weaker greenback before settling at $1.5649.

The recovery in Britain looks stronger than many feared following the worst slump since the Great Depression.

Traders are less confident about the US ahead of figures tomorrow which are expected to show its economic recovery slowed over the spring.
