Pubs pin hopes on World Cup drinkers

Publicans are hoping that a strong showing by England in this summer's World Cup could come to their rescue.

Trade body the British Beer and Pub Association believes the tournament will bring £124 million of revenue into the nation's pubs.

With about five boozers closing each day in the face of the recession and cheap supermarket drink, that could be a lifeline for some.

Research by sports bar chain Walkabout claims a quarter of Brits plan to watch at least three World Cup matches in a pub. More than one in 10 say they will watch every England match in their local, spending an average of £21 a head each time.
