Rio's China hope in BHP bid fight

Mining giant Rio Tinto is looking to China to help it underpin its defence against BHP Billiton's unwelcome £74 billion takeover offer.

Chief executive Tom Albanese says he wants to rethink fundamentally the company's relationship with Chinese firms, its top customers.

His plan is to develop partnership deals with China's steel companies and Government-backed investment vehicles.

Albanese says Rio is well positioned to become the "partner of choice" for Chinese companies. "We do see China being interested in investing overseas, China being interested in having access to more metal, more minerals - the things that we're good at," he said.

"Let's work on creating win-win opportunities from the start."

He refused to comment directly on the BHP Billiton offer, but yesterday said his rejection was based on price alone.

Rio has always held out the possibility of a merger that met its valuation criteria.
