'Robust' Clapham defies the downturn

Lavish lunches may be out, but the casual dining market is coping with the downturn better than most industries.

Clapham House, the business behind Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Tootsies and The Real Greek, today said sales are on the up. Revenues for the six months to the end of September rose 21% to £30 million, taking profits up 26% to £3.7 million.

Since then, trading has been "satisfactory".

Chief executive Paul Campbell said: "It's been surprisingly robust given all the woe in the economy and the media. GBK in particular is holding up pretty strongly. Customers are being much more careful but they are still out and about."

Clapham recently offloaded Bombay Bicycle Club, the least profitable and most expensive of its offerings, in a move that looks increasingly wise.

It is scaling back expansion plans in light of the downturn. Wolvercote Investments, a vehicle that may be linked to entrepreneur Hugh Osmond, has grabbed 8% of the shares. Campbell said of Wolvercote: "We only know what we have read in the press."
