Roche booming thanks to the rush for Tamiflu

Tamiflu maker Roche today smashed analysts' forecasts, with sales in the third quarter hitting Swfr12.39 billion (£7.62 billion), and upgraded its predictions on revenues from the swine flu treatment as governments queue up for it.

Tamiflu sales for the full year were now expected to come in at Swfr2.7 billion, up from Swfr2 billion before.

Roche said "strong demand" for its pandemic medicine would now be pushing through "at least high single digit full-year sales growth". Investors had been predicting a third-quarter revenue figure of Swfr12.18 billion. Demand for the anti-viral drug has soared since swine flu was first identified in April.

In the UK Roche has sold 23 million batches to the Department of Health, while global stockpiling of Tamiflu helped sales in the third quarter reach Swfr994 million, compared with Swfr101 million in the same period last year.

That helped cancer drug-specialist Roche post a 9.7% rise in third-quarter revenue. It was boosted by a 26% rise in sales of Avastin, a medicine for patients with advanced bowel and kidney cancer, which made Roche Swfr4.683 billion, and by breast cancer drug Herceptin, up 9%, as sales hit Swfr3.972 billion.
