Rock’s ‘saviour’ set to quit next month

Northern Rock's chief financial officer Ann Godbehere leaving her £75,000 a month post at the end of February the bank said today, after earning up to £900,000 for her role in the restructuring of the nationalised lender.

The bank stressed she had originally been employed just for the initial phase of public ownership and had never been on an annual contract.

It cited "other business interests" as her reason for leaving. The 53-year-old Canadian-born finance director was hailed as one of the saviours of the stricken bank when she was appointed last February alongside chairman Ron Sandler. Godbehere was previously chief financial officer of insurance giant Swiss Re.

The bank's chief executive, Gary Hoffman, said: "The original intention was for Ann to remain with the company for the initial phase of public ownership, but she has chosen to stay for a year and with her input we have accomplished some key stages in the delivery of our business plan."
