Rolls-Royce ups helicopter delivery forecast

British aircraft engine maker Rolls-Royce today predicted 15,000 helicopters would be delivered by worldwide manufacturers over the 10 years to 2018, slightly ahead of a forecast made this time last year.

The company, which recently posted better than expected 2008 results despite the economic downturn, said while short term demand for helicopters would be soft, underlying growth would resume next decade for both military and civil craft.

"The projection of deliveries in the short-term shows that the industry will not escape the economic downturn, but will remain quite resilient overall," said Ken Roberts, head of the company's helicopter business, adding that the expected 15,000 aircraft would be worth about $142 billion.

Rolls-Royce also announced a $400 million deal to supply engines to Textron's <TXT.N> Bell Helicopter business over a 10-year period.

Rolls-Royce's shares were down 3.2 percent at 284.50 pence by 1120 GMT.
