Sales boom at online ASOS

Online clothes outfit ASOS is booming. In a statement ahead of its annual shareholder meeting, ASOS said sales have more than doubled in the last six months.

The website now has 1.8 million registered users, up from 1.4 million a year ago.

Chief executive Nick Robertson said: "There isn't a retailer on the planet that isn't adopting some kind of caution, but right here, right now we are great. There are great opportunities for ASOS to land-grab."

Analysts say ASOS's younger customer base should mean it avoids the worst of the downturn.

Teenagers and women in their early twenties, who are the website's main users, mostly don't have mortgages or big debts.

Robertson said: "We remain positive about the long-term prospects for ASOS."
