Sky-high sign ups as 1m take HD

More than 1 million people have signed up to Sky's high-definition package with 243,000 subscribing in the last three months after the satellite broadcaster slashed the price of its Sky+HD box.

The latest quarter also saw the biggest ever high-definition audience when more than 300,000 people tuned in to see Manchester United beat Tottenham 4-1 on penalties.

Jeremy Darroch, chief executive of BSkyB, said: "There's no doubt that HD is really starting to take off, with a new family choosing Sky+HD every 30 seconds. With over a million homes in the UK watching in high-def quality, the future of TV is crystal clear."

The three months after Christmas, which is the third quarter of Sky's financial year, are traditionally the company's quietest period. Even so, today's figures were considerably better than most City analysts forecast.

An extra 80,000 customers was a 43% increase over the same period last year and takes Sky's total subscription base up to 9.3 million.

For the nine months to the end of March revenues rose by 7% to £3.96 billion while operating profits rose 13% to £589 million.

Darroch said: "We've had a strong start to 2009. We've seen a big increase in the number of customers joining us and strong uplift in the number of products and services that customers are taking which is an increasingly important area of growth."
