Spain economy edges up with second quarter of growth

The Bank of Spain today said the country's economy grew between April and June, marking a second quarter of expansion after nearly two years in recession.

The central bank said gross domestic product was up 0.2% from the previous quarter. GDP rose by 0.1% from January to March.

However, the bank noted that the economy remained 0.2% smaller than a year earlier.

Spain is the slowest of the major EU economies to emerge from recession and before January it suffered six quarters of negative growth.

The bank's assessment was provisional and is to be confirmed by the government next week.
