Sportingbet in merger talks

Sportingbet has confirmed it is in merger talks, rumoured to be with Swedish rival Unibet, in a deal which could be worth up to £600 million.

"The company confirms that it has had and will continue to have discussions with different parties in relation to a variety of potential opportunities," read a brief statement.

A report in The Sunday Times yesterday suggested that the two companies have held preliminary discussions about combining the businesses.

Shares in Sportingbet climbed 5% following the statement.

Any announcement on the merger is reportedly not expected until next year, with more talks said to be needed before a deal can be sealed. The most recent big merger in the gambling market was between Party Gaming and Bwin in the summer.
