Staff at City watchdog in call for union recognition

The City regulator was today under pressure to grant union recognition to its staff amid mounting uncertainty over their future.

Trade union Unite demanded talks with the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in a bid to get formal recognition for the watchdog's 2500 staff in London and Edinburgh.

It follows the publication of plans by shadow chancellor George Osborne to scrap the FSA if the Conservatives win power at the next general election.

Rob MacGregor, national officer of Unite, said: "The FSA must consider the needs of the staff working under massive pressure at the financial regulator.

"At a time of great economic and political uncertainty at the FSA, it is more important than ever that management and Unite representatives work together.

"Staff want a union to fight on their behalf, so the FSA should stop resisting the calls of the workforce.

"Staff view the plans from the Conservative Party as a bitter blow. They need reassurance that the important work of the financial regulator is not under threat," MacGregor added.
