Sterling hits high before holiday rush

The pound hit an 11-month high against the euro today just in time for families preparing for half-term holidays on the Continent.

The euro fell as low as 84.22p and gained 1.79 cents against the dollar at $1.4565. Some traders said the rise was down to the Prudential rumours but others said it was more the improved news about Europe's debt crisis.

The FTSE 100 also rose, gaining 98.52 points to 5136.60.
