Stieg Larsson trilogy opens Quercus chapter of success

Trilogy opens chapter of success for Quercus
Publishing a series of hit books that are then made into movies can be highly profitable, as Bloomsbury proved with Harry Potter.

Now fellow independent Quercus Publishing is starting to enjoy similar benefits with Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy.

Quercus's revenues almost trebled to £15 million in the first six months of 2010 from a year earlier, pushing operating profits to £3.4 million.

Larsson's books were the three top-selling fiction titles in the UK. He is also the first author to sell more than a million Kindle e-books through Amazon.

Chief executive Mark Smith said sales jumped thanks to this year's release of the first Millennium film, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, made in Swedish.

The English remake, starring Daniel Craig, will be released next year. Smith said Larsson's success had led to wider distribution for other Quercus authors in bookstores.

Quercus shares jumped 12p to 74.5p.
