Surf's up: record numbers use Facebook

More surfers visited Facebook than all of Microsoft's websites combined in the UK for the first time ever last month.

A rush of over-50s signing up to the site to write wall posts to friends and tag photos helped make Mark Zuckerberg's site second in popularity only
to Google.

Facebook attracted a record 26.8 million visitors in Britain in May, up 7% on the previous year, more than the 26.2 million who clicked through to Microsoft's MSN, WindowsLive and Bing sites, internet data group UKOM/Nielsen reported.

But it still remained well behind Google, which had 33.9 million visits.

Whilst Facebook was helped by the surge in over-50s signing up, the "Giggsgate" scandal - which saw super-injunctions by footballer Ryan Giggs, plus other stars leaked on social networking sites - helped Twitter's UK user numbers leap by a third to 6.1 million.

The micro-blogging site also grew its range of members, with the number of female pensioners on Twitter doubling last month on a year earlier, UKOM/Nielsen said.
