Tate & Lyle alert on £11m currency hit

Sugar and sweeteners giant Tate & Lyle today warned profits for the year just ended were hit for £11 million by the weakness of the dollar and other currency fluctuations.

However, the Splenda sweetener maker, which had three profit warnings in 2007, said trading in recent months was continuing in line with expectations.

In the year ended 31 March, second-half profits had been "broadly similar" to the £117 million in the first six months, it said. The company has been trying to diversify away from commodity sugar into more technologically advanced products.
