The Plumber buys Spanish football club

The colourful career of the wheeler-dealer known in the City as The Plumber has taken another bizarre twist: he has taken control of the Spanish football club Real Mallorca.

Paul Davidson, the entrepreneurial heating engineer, has bought a 93% holding in the club on the Mediterranean island where he now lives.

Davidson admitted: "I don't know much about football but I will use the club to promote my other interests."

The Plumber is best known for a high-profile legal battle with the Financial Services Authority in which he had a judgment accusing him of market abuse overturned.
