Thorntons enjoys sweet taste of Christmas excess

Chocolate lovers enjoyed plenty of Thorntons goodies at Christmas, according to the confectionery group's latest results.

Sales hit £80.7 million in the 14 weeks to 9 January, helped by a 10 per cent rise in demand for home-delivered chocolates through Thorntons Direct.

Total sales came in slightly lower than the same time a year ago because Thorntons stopped making own-label products for other companies, but stripping out those sales takings rose three per cent year-on-year.

Thorntons' high street stores sold 4.5 per cent less chocolate because it avoided the heavy discounting carried out last year, but the retailer said interim profits would be ahead of last year.
