Tomkins expects strong half after good sales signs

Engineering firm Tomkins thanked greater than expected volumes in its industrial and automotive business for improved first quarter sales and adjusted operating profit.

The higher volumes, coupled with benefits from restructuring, resulted in double-digit margins in the first quarter, the firm said today.

The company said it expected to remain strong in the first half but it was uncertain about continuing its momentum for the rest of the year.

Tomkins said it expected continued weakness in the North American construction markets.

On April 3 the company had cash and cash equivalents of $306.2 million (£203.8 million).
