Tory ad choice M&C Saatchi sees profits take a nosedive

Advertising agency M&C Saatchi, which has been hired by the Tories to advise on a general election campaign for the first time since 1997, today reported pre-tax profits fell 27% to £10.3 million last year.

Profits fell only 14% after taking into account a £1.4 million investment in new offices in Switzerland, Brazil and Japan.

Revenues fell 5% on a constant currency basis to £103.4 million.

Chief executive David Kershaw is hopeful of revenue growth of around 2.5% in its core UK market in 2010.

Although the market has stabilised, he added that clients are "slightly in hiatus to see what happens" with the general election.

Government spending on advertising is frozen when the election campaign begins which may affect one of M&C Saatchi's top clients — the National Health Service's anti-obesity campaign Change4Life.

M&C Saatchi shares today rose 2% to 77.5p.
