Influential US magazine Consumer Reports warned buyers to avoid the vehicle over a "safety risk" that it could roll over — the first time it has described any vehicle as unacceptable since 2001.

Toyota reacted to the charge by suspending Lexus GX sales in the US, Canada, Middle East and Russia, the only markets the model had entered so far.

About 6,000 2010-model GX 460s have been sold since the vehicle was released in late December and an estimated 1,600 are at dealerships.

The Japanese car manufacturer also announced that it was carrying out roll-over tests on its other SUVs, which include the Land Cruiser and Rav4, but was not suspending their sales.

The latest move takes the total number of cars that Toyoya has recalled during the last six months above eight million, after several of the manufacturer's models were hit by safety fears over faulty accelerators and braking issues.
