Trainer hails taxi drivers' learning

Have you noticed cabbies getting more polite? Black cab and mini cab drivers may seem unlikely finishing school students, but training group Educational Development International says they are flocking to its taxi driver course, where they can brush up on their customer service skills.

Local authorities are encouraging - and in some parts forcing - drivers to get the qualification, which covers customer care and health and safety.

Strong take-up from taxi drivers helped the exams and training company deliver pre-tax profits of £3.6 million for the six months to the end of March, compared with £700,000 for the same period last year. Sales were up by a third to £12.8 million, boosted by the government's push for vocational qualifications.

EDI's overseas arm has been helped by the weak pound.

"Despite wider economic concerns, investment in education and training services – particularly through the public sector – has continued to grow," said chief executive Nigel Snook.

EDI's shares jumped 4p to 102p as stockbroker Brewin Dolphin upped its price target to 150p and advised snapping up the shares.

The company has upped its interim dividend to 0.4p from 0.12p.
